    CHOOSING THE CORRECT MAGNET

    The lift magnets' holding value can decrease, and in some cases increase. To make sure the correct lift magnet is selected for the application, we first need to determine the type of ferrous material being lifted and the condition of its surface:

    The Material's Thickness, surface Finish, and any air Gap caused by dirt, paint finish, oil, water, slag, etc. are very critical factors when choosing the correct lift magnet. (Call us if you need more information regarding air Gap).

    Example:
    Lets say you have decided that a F-660 is the right magnet for your application.  For flat steel, the rated lifting power is 660 Lbs. Your material is a 500 Lb. block of cast iron with a clean rough cast finish.

    The formula for calculating the magnets lifting capacity is:
    T x F x M x G x Capacity

    T = Thickness
    F = Surface Finish
    M = Material
    G = Air Gap
    C = Capacity
    Apply Formula For Magnet Model F-660 Application
    Cast Iron Lift: T = 500mm, F = F4, M = M4 Hardened, G = 0.0mm and C = 660

    Using the above table and formula, we can determine this magnets' lifting capacity for cast iron block:
    100% x 65% x 70% x 100% x 660 = 300.3 Lbs.

    With a lifting capacity of 300 lbs. for this application, the formula indicates the magnet chosen is wrong and will not safely lift the iron block weighing 500 lbs. 


    The right magnet for this lift application is the F-1100
    100% x 65% x 70% x 100% x 1100 = 500.5 Lbs.

      

    Note:  The same formula applies to round steel shapes (pipe, tube, bar etc.) but your result needs to be reduced in value by 50%. If the application above was a cast iron bar, the bar would need to weigh equal to or less than 250 lbs. for the F-1100 magnet to safely lift the material.

    We recommend the I-Series or M-Series line of lift magnets when lifting thin sheets (0.196" - 3/8") since the design is better suited for this Application.  See yellow highlighted flat steel holding values for the I-Series magnet.
